How to screen and recoat your floors
A screen and recoat should be part of the regular maintenance that you do after sanding and sealing floorboards with a polyurethane finish. Although highly protective, this will wear off in time as it absorbs damage so your floors don't. However, let the polyurethane deteriorate too far and you'll find that your floor starts to get stained and scratched and you'll need to hire a dust free floor sanding machine and strip it back to the raw wood and start again.
What's a screen?
Unlike sandpaper, a screen is much less aggressive, consisting of a mesh covered with abrasive particles. The density of the particles is far lower than in sandpaper, which takes off just enough finish to create a key for the new coat of polyurethane to bond to.
When should I recoat?
If you suspect that the polyurethane is degrading, you'll need to act fast. However, generally, you should renew the finish every year in the kitchen or hallway and every three years elsewhere. A screen and recoat are not suitable, however, if your floors have suffered UV damage, have dents or deep scratches or pet stains, or if they've been waxed as a recoat simply won't adhere.
How to screen and recoat your floors
• Preparation is key so scrape down your boards to make sure they're scrupulously clean and pull out any nails or staples.
• Now vacuum your floor and then clean thoroughly with a solution of 1 cup vinegar in 1 gallon of water. Dry thoroughly to prevent water damage.
• You're aiming to lightly abrade the entire surface of the floor so sand the edges by hand and use a pole
sander or floor buffer for the centre. You'll need a 120 grit screen for hand sanding and for use with the pole sander, and 150 grit screen for the buffer. The floor should look evenly dull and opaque.
• Vacuum and wipe over the floor with a damp cloth (for a water-based finish) or paint thinner (solvent-based finish) depending on the finish you're using.
• Apply your finish with a T-bar, paint pad, brush or roller and then allow to dry for at least 24 hours or as directed on the tin.
